“Welcome to CantonAgainstRoundabouts.com, your digital platform dedicated to advocating against the proliferation of roundabouts in our communities. Palmer and Sheldon is the current target for the
“honor” of being the first roundabout in our fair township. Currently this is a 4 way stop/turn utilizing a blinking red light.
There is a degree of confusion using a blinking red light, which is why a regular stoplight would eliminate this issue. On a roundabout this confusion takes place while all 4 directions of traffic are moving quickly towards one another AT THE SAME TIME, as opposed to little confusion on when to go from a red light/green light. When you put on your common sense cape, which option seems safer?
A driver’s biological perception-reaction time is generally identical about 0.75 to 1.5 seconds—regardless of whether they face a roundabout or a red traffic light. However, the required cognitive processing and operational behavior differ significantly because a roundabout uses a continuous yield approach, while a red signal requires a complete stop.
Roundabout vs. Red Stop Signal
- Red Stop Signal:
- Involves a binary choice (stop or go).
- The stimulus is distinct and absolute (a light turning red).
- Reaction time involves moving the foot from the accelerator to the brake to achieve a complete stop.
- Roundabout:
- Involves continuous speed adjustment and gap acceptance.
- Drivers must scan circulating traffic, judge speed and distance, and decide whether to yield or merge without necessarily coming to a complete stop.
The crucial difference between reaction time between a
traditional stop light and a roundabout.
A driver’s response consists of several stages:
- Detect the event.
- Recognize what it means.
- Decide on an action.
- Move the foot to the brake.
For a yellow light, the decision is relatively simple:
- Stop if it’s safe.
- Continue if already too close.
For a roundabout, the driver may need to determine:
- Is the lead vehicle yielding?
- Has it stopped unexpectedly?
- Is another vehicle entering?
- Is there a pedestrian or cyclist?
This added decision-making can increase reaction time.
So, if you’re comparing the cognitive task:
- Stoplight: simpler, more binary decision (stop or go).
- Roundabout: more complex because the driver must judge the speed and distance of circulating vehicles, select an acceptable gap, and merge.

Jonathan LaFever, aka Johnny Fever of WKRP in Cincinnati fame, Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Services, has stated that all that is needed instead of a single traffic light is the following…………………………Intersection realignment, drainage improvements, sidewalk and ADA-compliant curb ramp installation around the new roundabout, guardrail replacement, lighting installation, and pavement markings. A minor amount of the Township-owned property that is currently designated as Freedom Park is proposed for permanent right-of-way.
A LITTLE BIT OF ROUNDABOUT HUMOR TO LIGHTEN UP OUR DAYS
I look up, I see it’s a roundabout, I was like, “Uh. I don’t know.” What do you mean you don’t know? She’s ghost white at this point… it’s a roundabout, nobody knows. Give me your phone. And I played Carrie Underwood’ Jesus Take the Wheel’.”
Two roundabouts walk into a bar………The first roundabout ordered a drink, turned left, and went back the way it came.
The second roundabout got confused, took the third exit, and ended up driving in circles all night…
Two roundabouts walked into a bar. The bartender said, “You two look familiar.” They said, “We’ve been going around in circles.”
The bartender says, “You guys have been here all night.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“We only came in once.”
Two roundabouts walked into a bar. One ordered a cocktail. The other said, “Can I get that shaken in a clockwise direction?”
Two roundabouts walked into a bar. One said, “I’ll have a beer.” The other said, “I’ll have whatever’s going around.”
Two roundabouts walked into a bar. The bartender asked, “Why so dizzy?” They said, “Long commute
“A roundabout circle doesn’t have to be empty for you to enter it. There just has to be enough room for you to fit. Pick out a hole and hit that thing like an NFL running back.”

Roundabouts can see more, up to 20 or more crashes per year, especially during the early adjustment period after installation.
For example, a busy roundabout in Ann Arbor, Michigan, saw total crashes increase from 149 in the five years before its construction to 650 in the five years after.
